Copy of Barbara Adamson’s  email to Mr. Dunford Makala
Commissioner for Social Welfare, Tanzania
20th August 2011

Dear Sir

I have been made aware of the refusal by a local government Social Welfare officer to allow three girls from the Bethany Family orphanage to come to England to undertake Childcare courses which will prove invaluable to them and to their community in the future. I understand, sir, that you will be making a decision very soon on this case because quite rightly, those who are legally responsible for the welfare of these orphans have mounted an appeal against the decision.

Sir, as a friend of the Bethany Project, it has been my privilege to have been able to tutor two girls (Jesca and Emmakulatha) in Science to enable them to pass the GCSE ('O' level) in science. I am a head of science at a secondary school and I am well aware of how difficult it is to motivate pupils. I am also aware of the hard work necessary to study science at this level when it has not been studied at a lower level in school. I was extremely proud of these two girls, who, in addition to their ordinary daytime study, also studied in the evenings to achieve extra qualifications. Their commitment was exemplary and they were successful in this as well as in their other studies. Sir, they are not alone! Almost all the students from Bethany that I have met have proved to be hard-working and eager to achieve the best they can, not for themselves alone but so that they can return to Tanzania, a country they love dearly, to share with their own people the knowledge they have gained. My school was honoured to be visited by these girls who were true role models of excellence, not just for their work ethic but for their modesty and good way of life, and for the joy they radiate.

It seems unthinkable to me that it should not be possible to send more young people to England to receive the same benefits and to continue to act as excellent ambassadors of their country. I beg you, sir, to reconsider this decision. If you have not had the opportunity to travel to Mwanza to see the Bethany Project at work, I would urge you to do so.

Thank you for your attention

Yours faithfully

Barbara Adamson
