Copy of Karen Pugh’s  email to Mr. Dunford Makala
Commissioner for Social Welfare, Tanzania
20th August 2011

Dear Sir,
>
I writing with regards to the future of three girls, Deborah, Mpelwa and Rehema, who are currently part of the Bethany Family, based in the Magu District in the Mwanza Region of Tanzania. I am aware that you are currently involved in making the decision over whether these girls should be allowed to travel to the U.K. to continue their Secondary education and further studies, as you have a responsibility for their welfare and to ensure that their educational needs are met. In this letter I hope to further inform you of what provisions are being made for the girls and to reassure you that the Bethany project wishes to work with you in providing the best opportunities for the girls.
>
My first contact with the Bethany project was through my own children’s school which is active in raising funds to support the family. The children from Bethany have joined with our children in singing together and this has always been a beautiful and memorable time for all involved. In March 2011, I also had the privilege of meeting Jesca, Emmakalutha and Sophia who spoke to our church about their work at College and life at Bethany. We frequently welcome guest speakers to our church and they certainly delivered an excellent and informative talk. Further to this I became
aware of their interest in studying History as a subject at O-Level and I thought I could help.
>
I am a History teacher and will be teaching the girls their O-Level History from mid-September. I have an undergraduate degree from the University of Oxford in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and a P.G.C.E. from the same institution which is ranked first for teacher training in the U.K. I have
considerable teaching experience, achieving Outstanding in my observed lessons by the U.K. schools’ inspectorate, Ofsted, and I have also been filmed teaching for a government training video sent to all schools in England and Wales. For the last six years I have been an examiner for both O-Level and A-Level papers.
>

I went to visit Jesca, Emmakulatha and Sophia in May at their home. We talked about the course we will be covering for the next two years and the skills they will acquire. We talked about the studies they are involved in now and we talked about Tanzania. They are proud of their country and keen to return and bring back their skills and knowledge.  The home where they are based is loving and welcoming and Graham and Sheila are sensitive to uphold and value their Tanzanian roots.
>
So what is my motivation to teach the girls? It is the motivation that drives any teacher and that is to equip the next generation to build a better future. I am sure that you share in this and you can be reassured that I will endeavour to give the best I can offer.
>
I also hope to teach Deborah, Mpelwa and Rehema in September and I know they are keen to work hard as they have already worked so well to pass their IELTS examinations.
>
I hope this e-mail has further equipped you in making an informed decision about the girls' future and reassured you that the Bethany Family seeks to provide the girls with an education of the highest standard.
>
Please contact me if you have any further questions.
>
With best wishes.
>
Yours faithfully,
>
