Copy of Rachel Jones’s  email to Mr. Dunford Makala
Commissioner for Social Welfare, Tanzania
20th August 2011

Dear Sir,
I am currently a student at the University of Manchester, studying History (BA Hons), and a member of the Bethany Project UK Team. I am writing concerning the three girls from the Bethany Project, Magu, who are hoping to be able to study at Accrington and Rossendale College in September. As I know you are aware, Social Welfare has this year denied permission for their visa applications. As a supporter of the Bethany Project, I am writing to urge you to overturn this decision and enable Mpelwa, Rehema and Deborah to come to study in England. I fully appreciate that Tanzania has laws and regulations to protect children under Social Welfare's care that must be adhered to by organisations working within the country. However, in this situation, it seems absurd and unfair that the three students in question cannot take a break from their secondary school education to take up the opportunity to study at Accrington and Rossendale College. The college may not offer free places to Bethany students again, so it is imperative that the chance is taken now.

It has been so encouraging to see the ways in which Tanzania has developed in recent years. This is in part down to the hard work and honesty of some of her politicians. Bethany's vision is to contribute to this development by enabling our children to make a positive contribution to their society when they are adults. The qualifications and teaching received at the English college would in turn impact hundreds of children that the students will teach or look after on their return to Tanzania. I know the three girls in question personally, and they are such bright and able young people who would achieve so much studying in England, and consequently in Tanzania following that.

I hope you share this view too. Thank you for taking the time to consider the current situation.
Yours faithfully,
Rachel Jones
