Copy of Sophia Joseph’s  email to Mr. Dunford Makala
Commissioner for Social Welfare, Tanzania
19th August 2011

My name is Sophia Joseph and I was born in 1993 in Tanzania. I joined the Bethany family in March 2007 after my mother’s death. After joining the Bethany family I carried on with my primary education at the local school. I finished my primary education (standard seven) in 2008 in Tanzania. After that, I did home schooling taught by Dave and Vicky Shaw (English volunteers from England), who helped me to improve my English language.

In 2009 I along with other two girls ( Fatuma and Minza) were offered a chance to come to England to study at Accrington and Rossendale College for two years course, (Childcare and Education level 3 Diploma course) full time. Free of charge. Although it would mean not to carry on with my secondary education, I thought it was the opportunity for that time and I might have not got it again. Also I looked at my other sisters (Eva, Rehema and Jesca) who had gone to England, came back and got a job without even going to secondary school, therefore I decided to take the opportunity and make the best of it for my future.

Now this is my third year in England and to what I have achieved with my primary education compared to if I would have gone to secondary school is absolutely incredible. I have just finished my Childcare and Education course level 3 at Accrington and Rossendale College and I’m predicted to gain grade A.

Also not only that but as part of my studies in England I have also successfully completed other qualifications which covers my secondary education; Adult English Literacy level one, GCSE Maths (Linear Foundation), Emergency First Aid, English for Speakers of Other Language (Entry 3 and Level 1) and English Functional Skills level 1. Also I’m doing other GCSE’s (General Certificate in Secondary Education) in other subjects.

At the moment I have been offered a chance at Blackburn University Centre to do a Lancaster University degree in Education studies and I think this is the best opportunity I will get as it will enable me to reach my goals. My educational goal is to be able to gain a BA in Education Studies if possible and eventually become a teacher. My life time goal is to improve myself and the standard of living for my other sisters at Bethany through higher education. My career goal is to teach at primary level in my country as I will be a confident professional by then and able to teach children to a high standard. Also help in changing the teaching system in my country from low to higher standard.

The reason I’m writing this email is to show you how important it is for my sisters to take this opportunity to come to England to study as it will enable them to reach their dreams. Besides, we don’t know if the chance will still be there if they decide to finish secondary school. As you stand as social welfare commissioner, I hope it is your duty to make sure that orphaned children achieve the best possible learning experience, the knowledge and skills that they need to reach their life goals just like other children with parents even if they don't have parents who can make that possible. Therefore I hope you will allow those people who have justice to these children and make it possible for them to reach their goals by providing different opportunities for them. One of these opportunities is to come to England and get a better Education and get a good job to be able to live for themselves and for others.

Yours with respect,

Sophia Joseph
